The Impact for Screenwriters
•
•
•
For every 50,000-60,000 scripts registered with the WGA (Writers Guild of America) each year, only 50-150 scrips are sold and a smaller fraction of those are actually produced. A vast majority of screenwriters face a significant challenge in simply getting their work seen, let alone made. So having a central place to post your work to be seen, is a game changer for writers.
A major obstacle for new and emerging screenwriters is the limited access to industry professionals like agents, producers, and executives. Many production companies receive hundreds of unsolicited scripts weekly, and most are not read. There is a clear need for a more direct and efficient way to connect with industry professionals.
Industry insiders and successful screenwriters often emphasize that the best way to break in is to network and find ways to get their work made. An app that streamlines this process of making professional connections and getting scripts read would directly address this fundamental challenge.
The Impact for Producers
•
•
•
Major screenwriting competitions can receive 5,000 to 10,000 entries annually, with only a small fraction of these becoming produced films. This overabundance of content makes it incredibly difficult to find quality material.
The average read time for a screenplay is between 1.5 to 2 hours. A single company can receive hundreds of unsolicited queries and scripts per week, with many not even being read.
Many production company websites have a strict policy against unsolicited scripts. This means that if a script isn't submitted through a known agent or manager, it's often not even considered. The Screen Spark app could solve this problem by providing a verified, direct channel for communication.
“Frustrated with the “black hole” that their beloved scripts gets sucked into with no real feedback or reason for the rejection of their story.”
-Anonymous - Screenwriter
“It takes a really long time to sift through all of the scripts to find one that they fall in love with and want to create.”
- Anonymous - Film Producer
If the Screen Spark App captures just 10% of the projects currently stalled due to lack of connection, it could enable the production of an additional 150 to 300 films annually, offering producers a vetted pipeline of high-potential projects and driving significant volume back into the independent market.
Ok, Let’s get to the details
Here’s my design process:
01 - Background
Screen Spark was founded by a group of indie screenwriters and film producers in 2025. These passionate film creators that know the struggles of getting great stories out there in the world because they live it everyday.
Their mission is to close the gap because screenwriters and producers so it’s easier for every filmmaker to get more movies / tv shows / short films actually produced.

There will be two types of users. Screenwriters and Producers. So I studied it from both perspectives to ensure that we’re giving writers and producers the best user experience possible for both.
Research Objectives
To discover what the potential users’ needs would be, to make sure they are able to create meaningful connections with writers / producers.
Discover how the app help facilitate the script purchasing process to benefit both parties.
To determine how to best structure the business to ensure there’s steady revenue growth for Screen Spark.
Competitive Analysis
In order to understand what other similar companies offer, I did a thorough SWOT Analysis on “Stage 32”, “The Black List”, and “Virtual Pitch Fest”.
Simple to navigate.
Professional Showcase:
This is your space to highlight your skills and experience. Include your contact information, the genres or project types you're interested in, and a list of your previous projects and accomplishments.A way to have a sense of community with other likeminded film creators.
A safe and secure way to sell / purchase scripts.

Highlights of what our “Must Haves” are
Next, it’s time for the Interviews
Screenwriter Takeaways
2/3 Participants shared their frustration with the submission process, describing it as a “black hole” where scripts are submitted but never receive meaningful feedback or a clear reason for rejection.
3/3 Shared they feel worried about theft or unauthorized use of my unique ideas and story elements.
Writer’s Desires for App:Submission tracking showing who is viewing their scripts to provide transparency.
Standardized evaluation forms with qualitative notes for rejected material.
Producer Takeaways
Through the interviews with the Screenwriters, I learned
2/3 Shared that it takes a really long time to sift through all of the scripts to find one that they fall in love with and want to create.
3/3 Participants are concerned for a liability of verifying the story is original to the writer and that the IP’s for both the writers and producers are protected for everyone’s safety.
Producer’s Desires for App:For promising scripts, a streamlined way to request further samples or a pitch meeting.
An invitation only virtual “pitch sessions” for specific projects that the producers can host.
I interviewed 6 participants. I made sure to have both, screenwriters and producers. I interviewed 3 writers and 3 producers.

Participant Recruitment
Participants
Through the interviews with the Producers, I learned
I conducted user interviews as part of the initial research phase. The process involved asking questions that focused on the specific difficulties faced by screenwriters and movie producers in their creative process, as well as what features they would find most valuable in a new application. By actively listening and synthesizing this feedback, I was able to translate their real-world problems into the foundational elements of the digital solutions I designed.

Interview Guide
I’m going to design an app with features for writers and producers to connect and create beautiful and meaningful stories.
Features to help them connect will be things such as:
Track their submissions.
A detailed way to search and filter through users to make it easier to connect with the right person.
Secure way for direct messaging.
Quick form for the producers to fill out to give screenwriters feedback.

Personas
Between the knowledge I gathered from the SWOT analysis and the interviews I conducted, I was able to put together these 2 personas that embodies 1 Screenwriter and 1 Producer.
A snapshot of Julian- [Screenwriter]
Julian Hayes, is a dedicated screenwriter from Portland, Oregon. Julian has meticulously honed his craft. He is committed to bringing meaningful narratives to life on screen, viewing screenwriting as his enduring purpose.
"My challenge isn't creating the story, it's finding the rare, kindred spirit who sees its soul amidst the noise and is ready to build with me."
A snapshot of Evelyn- [Producer]
Evelyn Reed,is a Los Angeles-based producer driven by a lifelong passion for transforming compelling narratives into viable screen projects. She specializes in efficiently guiding high-quality, often untold stories from concept to screen.
"My role is to be the unwavering bridge between a great story and its audience, ensuring every piece falls into place for that vision to truly shine."

I used a Venn Diagram to gain a deeper understanding of the business and its users, which helped me create a solution that works best for everyone.

Next, I got to have fun with figuring out how I get to solve this problem!
After some brainstorming and dreaming about what this Website could be like, I zoomed out a bit to create the user flows for the screenwriters, the producers, and the admin. Making sure we’re achieving all of the goals for everyone using this platform.

Building on that, here are four more possible ideas for expanding or adding to Screen Spark
Additions to benefit the Screenwriters
Workshop and Masterclass Hub:
Partner with screenwriting coaches and industry veterans to offer exclusive workshops or masterclasses on topics like logline creation, character development, or pitching.
01
02
Writer's Room/Collaboration Feature:
Create a secure space where writers can team up to co-write scripts. This would include version control, shared notes, and the ability to assign tasks.
Additions to benefit the Producers
AI-Powered Script Synopsis & Analysis:
An AI tool could automatically generate a concise synopsis and a brief analysis of a submitted script, highlighting key elements like character arcs, major plot points, and potential genre appeal.
03
04
Production & Development Slate Management:
A private dashboard where producers can manage their entire project slate. They could track the status of scripts, manage to-do lists for each project, and share notes with their internal team.
